Sanchari Vijay (17 July 1983- 15 June 2021) was an Indian Kannada film actor. His real name was Vijay Kumar Basavarajaiah, he started his career as a stage actor.
He won the National Film Award for his performance as a transgender person in the 2014 Kannada film “Nanu Avanalla…Avalu”. He was awarded the State Film Award and the Filmfare Critics Award for his performance. He died in a motorcycle accident in 2021. He acted in 25 films before his death.

Early life
Vijay was born on 18 July 1983 in Panchanahalli, a village in Kadur taluk of Chikmagalur district, Karnataka. His father’s name was Basavarajaiah and mother Gouramma. His father was an actor as well as a musician and his mother was a nurse and folk singer. Vijay was the younger of two brothers. His elder brother is Siddesh. Vijay’s parents died when he was a teenager. After that, he could not continue his studies. To finance his brother’s education, Vijay took a job in a hotel in Bengaluru. After his brother started working, Vijay started his studies. He became interested in stage acting while studying and joined the mobile theatre.
After completing his studies, Vijay started working as a lecturer in a science and technology college. He also started acting in television soap operas while he was active on stage.
Career
Vijay made his film debut in 2011 with the film “Rangappa Hagavithana”. Although his role was small, he did not have to wait long to play a lead role. In 2014, he played the lead role in the film Harivu. In 2015, he played the role of a transgender person in the film Nanu Avanalla…Avalu. For this movie, he received the 62nd National Film Award. Harivu also won the award for Best Feature Film in Kannada.
In 2018, he played the role of Suresh in the movie “Nathicharamy”. In the same year, he played the role of a visually impaired tourist guide in the movie “Krishna Tulsi”. After that, he acted in some popular Kannada movies like “Melobba Mayavi”, “Taledanda”, “Psychological thriller Firangipura”, “Puksatte Lifu”.
Died
Vijay’s motorcycle hit a light post in the JP Nagar area of Bengaluru on June 12, 2021, resulting in Vijay sustaining serious head injuries. He underwent surgery at the city’s Apollo Hospital on June 13. He was declared dead the next day at 3:34 am (IST) on June 15. He had donated both his kidneys, liver, heart valves and cornea before his death. He was cremated with full state police honours, with his brother Siddesh performing the last rites.
