Markandeya, however, remains calm and resolute, fully trusting in the protection of Lord Shiva. On his sixteenth birthday, Markandeya immerses himself in deep meditation and clings to a Shiva Lingam, praying fervently for divine intervention.
When Yama arrives to claim Markandeya’s life, he finds the boy’s devotion to Shiva unshakable. Despite Yama’s efforts, Markandeya continues to chant Shiva’s name with unwavering faith. Angered by the boy’s defiance, Yama casts his noose around Markandeya, which also encircles the Shiva Lingam. This act provokes the wrath of Lord Shiva, who emerges from the Lingam to protect his devotee.
In a dramatic confrontation, Shiva defeats Yama and grants Markandeya the boon of eternal life, declaring that true devotion transcends even death. Yama, recognizing Shiva’s supremacy and the power of devotion, retreats, and Markandeya is blessed with immortality.
