Kittur Chennamma

The 1961 film “Kittur Chennamma” is a Kannada-language historical drama that portrays the life and bravery of Rani Chennamma, the queen of the princely state of Kittur in Karnataka. Directed by B. R. Rani Chennamma, portrayed with grace and strength by actress B. Saroja Devi, refuses to bow to British demands and decides to take a stand.

The movie then vividly depicts the preparation for war. Chennamma rallies her people and fortifies her defenses, determined to protect her land. Her military strategist, Sangolli Rayanna, played by K. S. Ashwath, becomes a pivotal character, showcasing his loyalty and strategic acumen in the face of overwhelming odds.

The climax of the film features intense battle scenes, as Chennamma and her forces engage the British troops led by St John Thackeray. Despite their valiant efforts, the Kittur forces are ultimately overpowered due to superior British military strength and betrayal from within.

Captured after a fierce resistance, Chennamma is imprisoned, but her spirit remains unbroken.
