“Naladamayanthi,” a 1957 Kannada film directed by Kemparaj Urs, is an adaptation of the legendary story of Nala and Damayanti from the Indian epic, Mahabharata. The film weaves a tale of love, faith, and the trials faced by the couple, delivering a powerful narrative that has captivated audiences for generations.
The story centers around Nala, the virtuous and skilled king of Nishadha, and Damayanti, the beautiful and intelligent daughter of King Bhima of Vidarbha. The two fall deeply in love even before meeting, as Damayanti hears about Nala’s virtues from a swan that acts as their messenger. Their love is mutual, and they are determined to marry each other despite the challenges ahead.
Damayanti’s swayamvara (a ceremony where a princess chooses her husband from among a group of suitors) is announced, attracting many kings and even gods, including Indra, Agni, Varuna, and Yama. The gods, aware of Damayanti’s affection for Nala, try to dissuade her, but she remains steadfast in her choice. Eventually, she identifies Nala despite the gods assuming his form, leading to their marriage.
However, their happiness is short-lived. The jealous demon Kali, enraged by Damayanti’s preference for a mortal over gods, decides to ruin Nala’s life. He finds an opportunity when Nala, inadvertently neglecting his ritualistic duties, becomes susceptible to Kali’s curse. This curse brings a series of misfortunes upon Nala, including losing his kingdom and wealth in a game of dice against his brother, Pushkara.
Forced into exile, Nala and Damayanti endure hardships in the forest. Nala, stricken by guilt and despair, abandons Damayanti, hoping she would find a better life without him. However, their love remains undiminished. Nala, under the guise of Bahuka, becomes a charioteer, while Damayanti, relentlessly searching for her husband, faces numerous challenges.
Their journey of suffering and separation is a test of their love and resilience. Eventually, with the help of sage Rishi Brihadashwa, Nala regains his original form and reunites with Damayanti. He challenges Pushkara again in a game of dice, wins back his kingdom, and restores their life of prosperity and happiness.
“Naladamayanthi” stands out for its strong performances, especially by the lead actors, and its faithful retelling of a timeless epic. The film’s direction, music, and screenplay effectively bring out the emotional depth and moral lessons of the ancient story, making it a cherished classic in Kannada cinema.
