Ramya was born on 15 September 1970 in Madras (now Chennai), India, to a Telugu family. She is also known as the niece of actor and former Rajya Sabha MP Cho Ramaswamy. Ramya married Telugu film director Krishna Bhamsi in 2003. The couple has a son.

(1984 – 1988)
Ramya made her debut in 1984 with the Malayalam movie ‘Neram Pullarumbala‘. But the movie was delayed in its release. So in 1985, another movie in which she acted, ‘Vellai Manasu’, was released first. In the same year, she made her debut in Tamil with ‘Padikkadavan’ and in 1986, she made her debut in Telugu movies with the movie ‘Valai Mithrulu’. After that, from 1986 to 1988, she acted in some hit movies like ‘Par Sollum Pillai’, ‘Madana Gopaldu’, ‘Bhama Kalapam’, ‘Aasthulu Anthasthulu’.
(1989 – 1998)
After a series of hit films, some of her movies flopped. But after 1988, she returned to the mainstream with K. Vishwanath’s Sutradharulu and worked in some commercial films like ‘Allari Mogudu’, ‘Major Chandrakant’, ‘Allari Priyudu’ and ‘Annamaya’.
In 1993, Ramya made her Hindi film debut with Yash Chopra’s ‘Parampara’. In the same year, she worked in her second Hindi film ‘Khalnayak’. After that, she acted in ‘Chahat’ in 1996, ‘Benarsi Babu’ in 1997, and ‘Mian Chhota Mian’ in 1998.

After a 4-year break from Tamil movies, Ramya played the role of the female antagonist Nilambari opposite Rajinikanth in 1999. She then acted in the movies ‘Rajakali Amman’ in 2000, ‘Nageswari’ in 2001, ‘Sri Raja Rajeshwari’ in 2003, ‘Annai Kaligambal’ in 2007. She won the National Film Award for her performance in the Malayalam movie ‘Kaadal’ in 2007. ‘Alludu’ in 2005, ‘Kanchem Ishtam’ in 2009 are two notable Malayalam movies. Among the Telugu movies, ‘Ranga De Donga’, ‘Yamudiki Mogudu’, ‘Sweetie Nanna Jodi’, ‘Manikya’ are notable.
(2015 – Present)
Ramya played the role of Shivagami Mata in ‘Baahubali: The Beginning‘ and later in ‘Baahubali: The Conclusion’ in 2015. Both the movies were the highest-grossing movies. She received the Filmfare Award for her outstanding performance in the movie.
