“Renuka Mahatma” is a 1956 Indian mythological film directed by Babubhai Mistri. The movie is a dramatic retelling of the story of Renuka, the mother of the sage Parashurama, who is considered one of the avatars of Lord Vishnu in Hindu mythology.
The film opens in the ancient kingdom where Renuka is a devoted wife to the sage Jamadagni and the dutiful mother of Parashurama. Renuka is renowned for her piety and chastity, possessing supernatural powers due to her unwavering devotion. She plays a crucial role in supporting her husband’s penance and spiritual endeavors.
One day, while fetching water from a river, Renuka becomes momentarily distracted by the sight of Gandharvas (heavenly beings) frolicking in the water. This distraction causes her to lose her concentration, leading to her inability to perform her daily ritual of creating a pot from sand and water. When she returns to the hermitage without the water, Jamadagni, perceiving her lapse as a breach of her chastity and spiritual discipline, becomes furious.
Jamadagni commands his sons to behead Renuka as a punishment for her supposed infidelity. His elder sons refuse to comply, but Parashurama, ever obedient and devoted to his father’s wishes, carries out the grim order without hesitation. However, Parashurama’s loyalty and obedience move Jamadagni, and he offers his son a boon. Parashurama requests his mother’s revival and his brothers’ resurrection, and Jamadagni grants these wishes.
Renuka’s revival is marked by the restoration of her purity and her divine status. The story then delves into themes of duty, righteousness, and the profound bonds between mother and son, and between husband and wife. Parashurama’s act, though harsh, is depicted as a testament to his unwavering commitment to dharma (duty).
